Urticaria or Hives

Urticaria, also known as hives, is pale red bumps, itchy, swollen, that appear suddenly on skin.

Causes-

Acute urticaria- insect bites or body’s reaction to certain allergens.

👉Chronic urticaria- in some cases may be thyroid disease, hepatitis, infection or cancer.

Triggering Factors-

Food especially eggs, shellfish, berries, milk, chocolate, nuts.

🛑Medications such as antibiotics (especially sulfa and penicillin), ibuprofen, aspirin.

🛑Insect bites or stings.

🛑Blood transfusion

🛑Sun exposure, heat or cold, exercise.

How to get rid of Hives?

Cold compress- can relieve irritation.

âś…Avoid certain products that irritates the skin.

âś…Apple cider vinegar- due to its antihistamine properties help to relieve inflammation.

âś…Ginger- apply either cold ginger juice or peel the skin off of fresh ginger juice on inflamed skin.

âś…Aloe Vera gel- Apply gel on affected skin and leave for 10-15 mins and later rinse off.

âś…Green Tea- Rich in polyphenols and flavonoids helps preventing tissue damage and boosting immune system. So drinking green tea helps due to its anti inflammatory and antihistamine properties.

âś…Eat Probiotics.

âś…Olive and grape seed oil- mix 1:1 ratio, blend it well, dip cotton ball and apply on affected area.

âś…Witch Hazel- known for astringent properties releases histamine that aggravates the condition. Apply cream or lotion on affected area and leave for some minutes and later rinse it off.

Some Tips to remember if having Hives-

  • Stay away from stress
  • Wear loose cotton clothing
  • Avoid taking hot shower
  • Consume vitamin C rich food such as cherries, strawberries, kiwi, oranges
  • Stay out of sunlight
  • Avoid soy, nuts, eggs and dairy products
